Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing

Every treatment has its own specific benefits. The CO2 fractionated laser skin resurfacing and Erbium/YAG resurfacing have known to be very thorough treatment for aging and damaged skin. It is an extremely effective way to undo the damage caused by sun exposure and the passage of time.

Most patients can expect a 50% improvement and some can get 80-90% improvement. You can resume normal activity almost immediately. Tthere are no cuts or scars. And you will discover at the end of your healing that you've definitively turned back the clock.

Cortex™ Fractional CO2 Resurfacing System

Cortex CO2 and Erbium YAG Laser

There are many options for facial rejuvenation these days, but the gold standard for skin resurfacing remains the CO2 laser. But the early CO2 ablative lasers had prolonged downtime, potential risks of fully ablative resurfacing (burns with scarring), and required general anesthesia or nerve blocks so many patients opted for less invasive methods of skin renewal.

Today the new fractional technology has changed the way energy-based systems are used in clinical practice today. Los Angeles area cosmetic specialist Dr. Robert Hashemiyoon uses the Ellman Cortex™ system for its versatility. It has a wide range of settings, providing the kind of finely calibrated control that lets Dr. Hashemiyoon tailor your treatment precisely to your particular skin issues.

The Cortex™ combines the two workhorses of ablative technology are CO2 and Erbium:YAG.

The CO2 laser penetrates deeply and provides heat to stimulate collagen, while the Erbium:YAG laser helps to soften the texture of the epidermis and remove pigmentation from the superficial layers of the skin. The Cortex™ is widely recognized as the only laser that offers such flexibility with numerous treatment parameter options.

How Does Cortex™ Work?

Meet the ultimate laser resurfacing system - The Sandstone™ Cortex™ from Ellman International is the only skin-resurfacing laser system to include both CO2 and Erbium:YAG wavelengths in the same console. This innovative device offers fractional CO2 with an adjustable density for up to 95% coverage plus full-coverage Erbium:YAG. The dual wavelengths allow practitioners to perform resurfacing procedures on a wide range of skin types and for multiple indications.

Your skin has two layers. The outer visible layer, called the epidermis, acts as a protective barrier. The inner layer, called the dermis, provides structural support to the outer layer, keeping your skin looking tight and firm. Cortex™ delivers energy to both the outer and inner layers of skin, stimulating the production of collagen and triggering skin cell turnover.

The epidermis peels away, similar to a sunburn, but instead of revealing sun-damaged skin, new, helathy, firm skin appears. Many patients describe the treatment as a warm sharp feeling and experience an immediate tightening of the skin. After treatment, most patients look and feel like theyt have a sunburn. Typical downtime could last from several days to a week, depending on the depth of treatment. Obviously, the more aggressive treatments will require more downtime, but then also require fewer touch-up treatments and produce more dramatic results.

Embarrassed about sagging skin, Acne scars and wrinkles

How would you like to look years younger with tighter, smoother skin without painful surgery, fillers or injections? If you have wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, sun damaged skin with age spots or skin texture irregularities the Cortex™ will help reveal the deepest layers of your skin for a younger fresher more radiant look. Using a combination of CO2 and Erbium/YAG we can take 5-10 years off your face without a single cut. The CO2 fractionated laser and the Erbium/YAG resurfacing is most commonly used to treat:

Co2 Frationated and Erbium YAG Resurfacing
  • Mild to severe wrinkles
  • Pigmentation changes (discoloration)
  • Acne scars
  • Pucker marks (Smoker Lines)
  • Photo damage
  • Unsightly scars

How Do CO2 Laser Treatments Work?

Using a high-energy beam of CO2 light that is sent through a hand piece Dr. Hashemiyoon gently applies the treatment to the surface of your skin. The laser vaporizes lines, wrinkles, scars, dark spots and other irregularities, layer by layer. Depending on the severity of your skin problems, Dr. Hashemiyoon will choose the appropriate settings and number of times to pass the hand piece over each area. The stronger the treatment the better the results, but it will mean slightly more downtime with healing.

The Erbium/YAG laser is even more gentle on the skin with faster healing times than the CO2 Fractional laser. With these innovative techniques you can restore your skin to a healthy state and turn back the clock by decades.

While removing damage, it also stimulates the formation of new underlying collagen. Over time, the laser's collagen-stimulating properties will improve your skin's elasticity and help you retain fullness where you need it, resulting in a more rested, youthful appearance. Collagen resides in the substructure of the dermis, supporting the upper layers. When there isn't enough of it, you get that tired, drawn look. When restored, healthy collagen adds a certain brightness and radiance to your features.

Recovery after Laser Skin Resurfacing

The recovery time will vary; healing time is longer if you need deeper penetration to address your skin issues. For most patients recovery time is usually 1-2 weeks, but your skin may continue to improve up to 3 months. We will be monitoring your recovery closely. As skin continues to age at a normal rate, you may want to maintain your results with occasional touch-up resurfacing treatments.
